SPECIAL NEEDS The SDAEYC Special Needs Committee’s goal is to provide information and resources on working with and supporting children with disabilities and other special needs in early childhood settings. The SDAEYC Special Needs Committee includes parents, early childhood teachers, aids, administrators, therapists, students and anyone interested in learning more about young children with disabilities. Workshops and events focus on topics related to supporting children with and without disabilities in inclusive settings. Past workshop topics include Picture Schedule Make and Take, Behavior Support Techniques, and Young Children with Autism.

This site offers information and resources related to the earliest possible identification of young children and their families who may benefit from early intervention or education services (http://www.childfindidea.org). This site shows short videos of young children with typical development alongside those with red flags for autism spectrum disorder (https://www.firstsigns.org/index.html). Team of Advocates for Special Kids (TASK) provides advocacy information, workshops and information in English, Spanish and Vietnamese (http://www.taskca.org/). The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund dedicated an entire issue of their online newsletter to Child Find (http://dredf.org/mail-se/2011/march/IDEA-Child-Find.html).
http://recognitionandresponse.org/ RecognitionandResponse.org provides educators with information and resources to help early educators address the needs of young children (3 to 5 year-olds) who show signs that they may not be learning in an expected manner, even before they begin kindergarten. NECTAC is the national early childhood technical assistance center supported by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) under the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). NECTAC serves Part C-Infant and Toddlers with Disabilities Programs and Part B-Section 619 Preschool Programs for Children with Disabilities in all 50 states and 10 jurisdictions to improve service systems and outcomes for children and families. http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/se/fp/documents/ecdulpimpl.pdf The Handbook on Developing and Implementing Early Childhood Special Education Programs and Services was developed by the Special Education Division, California Department of Education. For the past 44 years, FPG Child Development Institute research and outreach have shaped how the nation cares for and educates young children. FPG has a proud history of serving as an objective, knowledgeable force for social change to enhance the lives of children and families. Researchers focus on parent and family support; early care and education; child health and development; early identification and intervention; equity, access and inclusion; and early childhood policy. Center for Disease Control and Prevention website includes links, studies, free fact sheets, free guides, and free booklets on a vast array of topics linked to young children. The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities is a central source of information on disabilities in infants, toddlers, children, and youth. The State Resource Sheets will help you connect with the disability agencies and organizations in California. They offer free articles and publications.
